My study of the human body and finding paths for excellence with technology + research

One of the great opportunities we have today is to not only understand how to maximize human performance and happiness, but also to become highly specialized. More and more technology and research is beginning to demonstrate what our bodies are doing in certain moments.

To that end, I thought it fun to see how my body reacts when I am coaching. Now below are 2 graphics — the first is me in a regular conversation and the second is me actively coaching. Note, I am not lifting or doing any actual training in these moments.

Regular activities, just simple work

Note the general range between 75 and 85 with peaks up to 110.

Coaching athletes

Here we see HR touches 155 with significant time above 80 and in some cases up to 120 the “norm”. What is striking to me is the height of my heart rate and the sustained exertion during those periods. To give context, here is a snapshot of a training session I did — note the similarities.

This isn’t just data

This is me. This shows the stress and strain that coaching puts on any person in these roles. I take coaching extremely seriously. I love everyone of the athletes I serve. My number one goal is to give them the tools, instruction, and support to achieve their goals. Everyone begins and follows a unique path, but if we can give ourselves to others in these pursuits, we all win.

The numbers show an interesting story. This is a high strain period of time, but not quite elevated enough to qualify as training. It does require a sensible perspective relating around the type of foods I eat to support this exertion while also impacting how I do my own workouts.

What else can this data unlock?

How can I improve my health and be a better coach?

What impact does this have on me generally?

What questions do you have regarding your health and these enjoyable yet clearly stressful areas?

I find this incredible and an opportunity. Specific areas I am examining:

  • The impact of stress on work place professionals using Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
  • Signals and recovery protocols that allow professionals (corporate, police officers, military, and service professionals) to detect early the symptoms of strain and make recovery protocols
  • Sleep and stress from corporate work and the bodies reactions
  • How to detect and change the flight / fight state of your nervous system
